inthemix-2010-1

In 2009, Melbourne-based dance music giant Future Entertainment added another festival to its formidable repertoire. Running in conjunction with We Love Sounds, the new all-nighter Winter Sound System boasted Armin van Buuren, Laidback Luke, James Zabiela and a host more.

With a stable that also includes the gargantuan Future Music Festival tour and Melbourne mainstay Summadayze, Future has been in the festival game as long as inthemix has existed. It’s fitting, then, that the inthemix 10 years arena will feature at Winter Sound System next month, headlined by the untouchable Underworld. To talk all things 10 years, we got on the phone to Future’s main man Mark James.

What are some of the most significant changes you’ve seen over the last 10 years in dance music here in Australia?
Coming into the last ten years, there was still a broader market perception that dance music was still a fad and would never be as large as rock ‘n roll. I think over the last ten years, it has developed into a medium that holds its own against a rock festival or a chart placement. A lot of music has merged. Ten years ago dance music was its own genre; now indie-rock and dance has sort of fused together into one music medium. That sort of only happened in the last two or three years I’d say – you can see with our festivals, where we have the likes of Franz Ferdinand, The Prodigy and Does It Offend You, Yeah? making it more of a mixed bag.

steveaoki-2010-4Steve Aoki takes some time out of his hectic schedule to give us a quick interview on the lead up to Winter Sound System

When did you first discover the turntable and your passion for music?

I guess before the turntables I discovered the whole addiction for record collection. When I was 13 I bought my first 7” and by the time I was in my early 20’s it had grown into a really bad problem. By that time I had amassed 12k – 15k records and had to cut it back, I wasn’t even a DJ at that stage. The closest I had come to it was being a radio DJ at college. The records I collected and the ones that meant a lot to me could not be played at a club, they were like punk and hardcore records, really rare noise records and post-punk records and stuff like that.

Then as I was developing my label, Dim Mak records which I had being doing since I was 19 it became the driving force to get me into Djing as I was throwing these small parties in LA in 2003 and started DJing with the other bands and DJs. Eventually I then started remixing all these artists. My first remix was with Bloc Party which came out in 2006 which I did with a Blake my production partner under the name ‘Weird Science’ and then for the next 3 years Blake and I under the name Weird Science remixed like 14 artists and then you know at the end of 2007 I started remixing under my own name and then slowly but surely started producing original tracks and now I’m on my way to finish my own album this year featuring 8 to 9 different vocalists.

What where some of your early influences?

My early influences were my favourite bands like “Gorilla Biscuits, Born Against, even some more well known bands like Refused, Nirvana. They weren’t DJs. I never like saw a DJ and thought I wanted to become one. My playground was like hardcore-punk to rock and roll. That’s where I gained a lot of my musical experience, especially in the studio where I would practically live, recording records with my old bands.

Now I have my own studio here with no bands which is a blessing and you know I have my own chamber and my own space and I just outfitted the studio in my house exactly the way I needed it to be and its like a dream come true.

Is there a particular moment in your career when you realised you were ready to commit to Djing as your professional career and could make a good living from it.

I would say in 2007 at Coachella. It was the first major festival that I had played at that time and it’s in my own back yard so I was always like “Coachella, now that’s a real music festival, it’s not a DJ festival its a music festival with all the biggest artists playing together” and I would say that playing at it was the pivotal point in my career. At that time people started following me, not even as a producer, I had some sort of fanbase from DJing in LA and travelling around playing these small parties here and there. Actually I have no idea why people even watched me in the beginning, I couldn’t even tell you what the interest was. But that gave me enough breath to take it to the next level and start Djing and producing more and to be more well rounded.

Between your record label, the clothing label and your artist management not to mention your own hectic DJing schedule you have a lot of strings to your bow. How do you make room for all the commitments you have in your schedule without conflicting or letting anyone, especially yourself down?

I surround myself with dedicated staff who work hard to maintain the status quo of all our businesses and still progress them forward and make sure that all the i’s are dotted and the t’s are crossed. All the Dim Mak label staff have been doing the label for 13 years now and have put out over 165 records. There has been a serious evolution as a label to survive in a very volatile climate. In the music industry it is fucking difficult to survive as an independent label. As a major label you can cross-collateralise all your different things on artists that you have been selling for 30 – 40 years and selling over 50 – 100 million records in total. For us we are just surviving off a few artists that are really establishing themselves and establishing the connection that they have with Dim Mak. For the clothing side it’s been a new venture that’s taking place and enabling us to become a larger brand with a bigger range with more promotion and manufacturing/sampling. I’ve been working on for the last two years.

So you know it takes time to set all these different things in motion but once we have the teams in place that can handle the work-flow it seems to work out. I’m still very much involved in all the business but I have a solid team that handles the day today.

What aspect of your business life gives you the most personal satisfaction?

Right now just closure on a few things. My own satisfaction is closing up the big projects that I've been working on so that I can close the book on my album. I've been working on my album for over a year and it’s a tiring process to work with so many vocalists and to handle the business end after you work with them in the studio is such a long process. Singed artist’s clearances from the labels, just a lot of red tape. But its been a great process for the last 6 months working with Lil Jon, Weezer, Black Star, Romanthony, Sky Ferreira, Kid Cudi, Super Black, you know I’m trying to get a different take on every track so it realty fits with the artist. You know like working with Rivers, I wrote the track with him in mind as a rock track. The first track I’m doing with Travis Barker is like a fucking heavy heavy track that I’m writing now with the idea that he is just going to be banging his drums in the way that he does.

It has been a massive couple of years for you and some of your artists, how does it feel to see it all blow up on such a global scale?

Even just Bloody Beetroots on its own is amazing, we signed them back in 2007 and we have been developing the artist with them and their vision. Bob Rifo has an idea, he has a direction and a vision, he has his own sound and we just support him in every possible way that we can. And seeing that come to life and seeing the kind of response around the world for the Bloody Beetroots. I look at where they started when they were just remixing records, producing tunes that were really meant for clubs and now they are a full live act which I was able to see at the WMC and I was completely blown away, astonished by there live show. It’s such a great feeling. At the end of the day that’s why I even have a label. Seeing that happen with Bloc Party as well, you know we signed them in 2003 and we did a deal with Atlantic Records to release the album. The album went on to sell 350k albums in America which is unheard of these days. Seeing something like that happen and just watching the growth, you can’t even put a price on something like that.

What activity did DIM MAK have at the WMC this year?

We had a Dim Mak WMC showcase with Afrojack and myself. We have produced 6 tracks together and we did a back to back DJ set and tested them out on the crowd. Then Laidback Luke came and jumped on with us and Bob Rifo and Tommy came from the Bloody Beetroots and did some vocals on the track. Sonic C, Autoerotique, Rob Roy, Fischerspooner and Joachim Garraud also performed and it was a packed night and a whole heap of fun.

Then at Ultra I played on the same stage as the Bloody Beetroots, and Mstrkrft did a big show with Benny Bennasi on the Tuesday, I missed it but I heard it was a great show.

You have built up a very large and very loyal fan base in Australia, what have been some of your favourite memories from of your last couple of tours?

The last Sydney show at the Metro ranks up there with the top 10 shows I have ever been a part of. The kids were going wild and were so crazy. You know I started a band called Rifoki, with Bob Rifo from the Beetroots and it’s a hard core punk band and I've been dropping that and scaring people. I’m sure there will be a lot of negative feedback, like WTF! is going on, its just screaming hard core sound, there is no sense its just noise. And you know I played that track out to the Sydney crowd and I felt like they accepted it and it’s so nice when people accept something so fucking abrasive. It was amazing. Australia in general is one of my favourite places in the world.

mandy-2010-1

After 15 years of performing solely as a DJ unit M.A.N.D.Y. will be debuting there LIVE set up at the Winter Sound System in June.

With information of what the LIVE set up consists of scarce and speculation over a Booka Shade style set up mounting, our friends over at ITM got on the phone to Patrick Bodmer ( one half of M.A.N.D.Y.) to find out exactly what we’ll be seeing this winter.

“No, we’re not coming as the next Booka Shade,” Patrick laughed. “We are more coming from the DJ side of things, and we don’t want to pretend to play instruments. We bring three computers and many effects. It’s a mixture of all our hits, favourite remixes and new versions. Of course, we’ll be remaking each track live, but in the style of DJs.

”This decks-and-effects show has been three years in the planning, with recent studio sessions to get it in shape. “We spent maybe two months in the studio going through 25 or 30 tracks and remaking them for 2010,” the man explained, before settling on a more exciting anecdote. “We tried the show out at Coachella last year, and Red Hot Chili Peppers came onstage while we were playing to offer us beers. They were excited, so I guess it will be a good show!”

EllenAlienDustNow it already seems an eternity since Ellen Allien last remodelled her own sound with the sharp-edged diamond Sool in 2008 – a release which opened the gates to a far-off parallel world where minimalist artefacts float through the room with a cool elegance and distanced allure. Yet, just like each of Ellen's previous albums, this was followed by  a cut. A metamorphosis. A reincarnation.

With her new album, Dust, Ellen removes the sense of remoteness entirely. A warm immediacy takes centre stage in place of distanced artistic abstraction.  As such, what is perhaps Ellen's most personal album takes the form of a complete spectrum of her creative output to date, a cross-section in time which also looks ahead to previously untrodden paths... The world according to Ellen.

Check out a teaser for the new album out very soon and a classic from a few years back..

steveaokipillowfaceHipster DJ-to-the-celebutantes Steve Aoki loves to flaunt all his celebrity friends (i.e. Lindsay Lohan and company) and quasi-celebrity "cool bands" he's down with (Klaxons, Justice). On his first mix album, oddly credited to him as if an artist album, Aoki gets to pull out all the "cool band" stops in his arsenal, both in the mix selections and in the friends he recruits to deliver guest raps atop the music. Lohan's absent, but the likes of Har Mar Superstar, Spank Rock, Amanda Blank, and Hot Hot Heat's Steve Bays show up to drop verbal -- well, something, though it's certainly not science. It appears that the only instruction Aoki gave his pals was to talk dirty. A lot. Using as many expletives as possible. Especially if female. Perhaps that's a smokescreen so that listeners won't notice how mediocre Aoki's mixing skills are -- though one could assume that if you're in Aoki's target demographic, his (lack of) mixing skills won't exactly keep you up at night. If you could get rid of all the "guest drops" here, you'd be left with a half-decent mix disc, albeit a fairly hipster-ly predictable one: not just remixes of Klaxons and Justice (twice), but Bloc Party and Peaches (both co-remixed by Aoki himself under the Weird Science moniker) as well as hot new things such as Does It Offend You, Yeah? and Yelle. The tracks range from pretty damned good (the Soulwax remix of Klaxons' "Gravity's Rainbow") to utter nothingness (Green Velvet's "Shake and Pop" -- remember when he used to make good-to-great house records?), most sadly occupying a middle ground of mediocrity. To put it another way: if you're so inclined (to care about, say, Erol Alkan's rub of Franz Ferdinand), you likely already own the best of these tracks, without the obnoxious rapping atop them. And if you're so inclined to care about Aoki, you likely already own this. The rest of you needn't bother, nor care. Thomas Inskeep.

sethtroxlerarticleboogybytes“Boogybytes - it is about score, about clubs and pubs, about personality and the things that define us...” This vocal introduces the next instalment of the Boogybytes mix CD series. Volume 5 is the first CD not to feature a star from the label but to give a surprise appearance to the extremely charismatic and not-so-secret insider tip Seth Troxler. His top-drawer DJ, remixing and production skills, as well as his highly praised releases on labels including the Ghostly International sub-label Spectral Sound, have helped him attract considerable interest and great bookings in his home city of Detroit and his current surroundings in Berlin. BPC aficionados may be familiar with Seth through his collaboration with Ryan Crosson and Sean Reves. The trio delivered an extremely successful remix for Kiki under the name “Visionquest” which has been licensed for numerous other releases.

After the success of their night at the Berlin club Watergate, the paths of Ellen Allien und Seth Troxler crossed once again. Seth was spontaneously given the honour of making a Boogybytes CD. After agreeing euphorically and without hesitation, Seth took the time to carefully reflect on his new environment in Berlin: “I wanted to do something which would set itself apart from all the trends, and yet paint a picture of this city and portray it the way I experience it.”

The track selection which came out of this process conveys this picture superbly. Its palpable deepness occasionally harbours a touch of melancholy, yet never becomes overwhelming, for at its peaks - which certainly include Seth's Fever Ray mix - the tension is released in the most explosive and unbridled manner. Seth already considers certain tracks as classics. For him, Nicolas Jaarís “Time For Us” and the epic “Birds And Souls” are works with a great future.

Seth's particular way of combining the most varied of musical elements is shown both in his fitting track selection and in his remarkable mixing technique. Not only are the individual remixes artfully arranged and intertwined, but single elements are also occasionally reemployed as material in a sound montage. Seth merges tracks into one another almost imperceptibly whilst constantly creating new angles in the way they overlap and retreat from one another. Other songs, on the other hand, follow one another abruptly and yet completely seamlessly. Sound elements are dispersed over the tracks, acting as recurring signals. In the case of the dance floor stormer “Stricher” by Roman Flügel (one half of the duo Alter Ego), a complete section of the song is remoulded as a transition between tracks. The 4/4 kick drum does not remain fundamentally in the foreground; in the funk-jazz-tinged pieces by Bakara and Dinky its presence is withdrawn, although the compulsion to dance is never lost. Seth Troxler pays homage both to his Detroit roots and to the minimal house style of his new home, and as a result he moves his hallmark sound beyond the limits of 12” releases for the first time.

inthemix-2010-1inthemix Celebrate 10 Year Anniversary Presenting the Main Arena at the Winter Sound System!

In 2010, inthemix.com.au is celebrating an epic milestone with their 10th anniversary. In addition to all the new developments coming to the site, they have got one hell of a celebration planned. This June, Future Entertainment & Winter Sound System will help in marking the landmark occasion, with inthemix 10 Years proudly presenting the main arena at the Winter Sound System in both Melbourne & Brisbane.

Given some of dance music’s most exciting names are on board for the winter festivals, it’s a perfect fit for ITM’s decade in the scene. Topping the bill in the inthemix 10 Years main arena, certified dance titans Underworld (Melbourne only) will bring their litany of seminal classics to the stage. With over two decades as electronic pioneers, there can be no more appropriate headliner.

Representing the ‘sound of now’ are unstoppable Italian upstarts Crookers, who have set the dance world alight with their inimitable approach to production in recent times. They’re sure to get the arena heaving. The inthemix 10 Years main arena will also play host to frequently flying Dutchman Laidback Luke. After a storming sets at Winter Sound System in 2009, it’s little wonder the honorary Swedish House Mafioso has been invited back.

Many more international and local stars are still to be announced for the inthemix 10 Years main arena at the Winter Sound System festival shows , so be sure to check inthemix.com.au/10years for updates over the coming weeks.

crookers_pCrookers mania reaches fever pitch as the Italian hipsters unleash their eagerly anticipated debut album “Tons of Friends” out now on Southern Fried Records and by all accounts it’s a stormer…

Tons of Friends towers over us as a daunting and dense work. Their biggest hit, a remix of Kid Cudi’s Day ‘n’ Nite (which peaked at number two in the UK) only makes an acappella appearance, despite its dominance as the party tune of two consecutive summers: a rare feat in fast-moving festival circles.

But it’s to Crookers’ credit that they don't chase ghosts here, instead opening up space to feature 25 collaborators across 20 tracks. The roll call of rappers includes Kelis, Pitbull, Will I Am, Cudi, Spank Rock and Rye Rye and all supply their lyrical licks with vigour.

More unconventional guests include Soulwax, Sepultura's Mixhell, Major Lazer, Poirier and Drop the Lime – who hurl in their studio knowledge – whilst vocal contributions from Roisin Murphy, Miike Snow and, rather incongruously, Tim Burgess are all effectively consumed and assimilated into monstrous club bangers. Such an amount of guests means nearly every track sounds like a lead single, destroying conventional album architecture in favour of full-throttled bounce.

Hold Up Your Hand, featuring a turn from Murphy, shines through with its sleazy German schaffel-beat whilst Cooler Couler sees Yelle enjoy a menacing and boisterous jaunt though pop. One of the absolute highlights is Miike Snow's Remedy: an oscillating piano stomper layered with an old-school rave breakbeat which is a glitchy call-to-arms certain to rip up most dancefloors with filthy aplomb.

crookers-2010-2

Tons of Friends is 100% party focused. If you want four-to-the-floor ghetto bass, sleazy RnB and the balls-out bravado of hip hop slammed onto perverted techno then you are in the right place. It's just a shame it wasn't around 12 months ago to bathe in the laser limelight of its true historical moment.

The Montreal-bred techno DJ will be kicking things off at the end of April in Rotterdam and playing select dates throughout Europe under the banner. Expect stops in the usual haunts—London, Berlin, Madrid and Ibiza—but also in some unlikely places as well. Tiga will be bringing the sound of Turbo to Birmingham, Emmaboda (Sweden) and Liege (Belgium). While full line-ups for each date haven't been quite confirmed yet, it's easy to imagine that for a tour like this that Tiga will be bringing out the big guns like Boys Noize, Brodinski, Zombie Nation and Erol Alkan. When reached for comment in Montreal, the Turbo boss teased that it would be a "Turbo plus friends" kind of vibe, so even artists with a single remix to their name for the label seem like they might be fair game.

Also promised? A visual extravaganza. Tiga couldn't reveal the exact details, but he hinted at the man responsible for the set-up was "very well-known" and that it will all be "a bit psychedelic." The label hasn't been known to put money into doing visuals before, but as Tiga tells it, the draw of "taking the idea of cool visuals for a two-hour show and spreading it out over an eight-hour night" was too enticing for events of this magnitude.

Plans are also underway to create a website that will archive DJ sets from the nights in question, offered up mere days after the show has concluded, and Turbo also plans to release a compilation album after the entire tour is done.

Tiga plays WINTER SOUND SYSTEM (Melbourne & Brisbane) with Zombie Nation this coming June.
